A big consolation prize for not winning the Masters lottery

A big consolation prize for not winning the Masters lottery

Following a year’s worth of restoration work, Pinehurst No. 2 is reintroduced to the world. Play has been open on the 2014 host to the US Open and US Women’s Open for a little while, but that was a soft open. This is a formal reintroduction to the Powerful Youth At The Masters Donald Ross gem.Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were selected by the resort to transform Pinehurst No. 2, in the club’s words, for the next 100  years. But, the club wanted to make sure the rework was authentic to the tradition of the club and the area – the sand hills and dunes of North Carolina.By their admission, the club had learned to grow grass in this climate and topography. With six different grass cuts on the course over the last quarter-century, the genius of No. 2 had been shielded form the eye.
The strategy of the course had been hidden by grass. Mounds, rolling hills and the shape of the track had been taken from view. That’s The Common Point Of Woods And Nicklaus not true now. If No. 2 was unmistakable before the restoration, it might be unrecognizable to modern eye today. And that’s just what the club was trying to achieve – redefining the Ross masterpiece for the 21st century with a view backward to what made this place a beacon of golf excellence from beneath the towering trees of Pinehurst.
