The Youngest Member In Golf-loving Family
Monahan is currently first in the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association's Class 3A individual rankings while his classmate, senior Zach Carlson (37.66 average), is rated third. Top-ranked Spencer also returns junior Sam DeLoss (41.33).His father, Tom, who's in his third month as a golf professional at Sim Park Municipal Golf Course in Wichita, Kan., was the golf pro at the Spencer Golf and Country Club for 23 years Lee Westwood Is The New Top Player and taught each of his three children how to be mentally sharp in the sport.Their mother, Barb, who will join her husband shortly after Jay's graduation from Spencer High School, has driven Jay and his older siblings Joel and Jodi to compete in countless tournaments.
"Growing up in a golf family, one thing my parents stressed was my mental game," said Monahan. "They came to my meets and tournaments to watch and if I did something they didn't approve of, they'd let me know. They told me to try to get in a zone and take it one shot at a time."Being in a golf family, I spent a ton of time on the course. When there were times I didn't have a thing to do, I'd head out there. I spent a ton of time on the putting green. My parents encouraged me and my love for the game."
"I feel the best feature of Jay's game is the way he practices," said Bomgaars. "Jay practices with a purpose every day and as a coach, you can't ask for any more. He sets a great example for our younger kids the way he practices.
